Raising a boy can be loud, messy and a blessing and they’ll grow up to become brothers, husbands, fathers, and upstanding members of the society. As mothers it’s our duty to guide our sons towards manhood so they can set examples for their future generations. Sure we can nurture them and love them, but in order to for them to thrive with dignity, here 5 things every mother needs to tell her son.
OWN YOUR MISTAKES
This one is perhaps one of the biggest lesson that every mother needs to tell her son. If you make a mistake, no matter how big or small, own up to it and apologize for it! Don’t pass the blame, don’t try to hide it, just own it. Then learn from it and move on. It’s as simple as that.
“NO” MEANS NO!
No matter who it is, or what the situation maybe, if someone says “NO”, then it means “NO”. No they don’t want to go further, they don’t want to do something they’re not comfortable with, no they simply aren’t ok. If someone says “NO”, then you need to respect their decision and not push it. There should be no argument on that!
IT’S OKAY NOT TO BE STRONG ALL THE TIME
Life is plain hard and it’s unfair to go through tough times alone. So learning at an early stage in life that is a-okay to break down, to give up and surrender to your emotions and reboot, will give you the energy to heal and fix thing all over again.
DON’T BE A BULLY!
And don’t be afraid to stand up or call out people who are!
EMPATHY
Empathy allows you to put yourself in other people’s shoes and see the world from their perspective. That’s the only way to feel understood and be seen. So teaching your son empathy will give them grow a strong self of self and will give them the leeway to be empathetic.
CHIVALRY & RESPECT FOR WOMEN
It’s important to recognize the value for each person because chivalry and respect for women comes from modeling it into your children’s lives from the beginning. Respect is foundational that starts with the women at home whereas being polite or kind, are basic manners that every human being deserves regardless of their gender. And although it seems that these two things go together easily, but sometimes they don’t. Finding this balance is the key and shaping them into their personality.
