The old adage that “a woman’s rightful place is in the kitchen” is a thing of the past now because after what we saw, we don’t think we need “feminism” to advocate for women’s right or gender equality, because Shan Foods #OneBiryaniOneFamily campaign is infused with the much needed optimism in our lives. And truth be told, I would also love to see my man spend more time in the kitchen! (hopefully)!
Shan’s new ad is a relief from women clad in kaam walay kapray and singing songs, forcing us to cringe from the same format of a young woman feeling the pressure to please her prospective in-laws in order to be welcomed in the family. However, in this case it is the young man who arrives at the prospective in-laws to win their hearts. What happens next is a great start towards progressivity and we’re cheering for Shan Foods now!
THIS IS WHY SHAN FOODS NEW CAMPAIGN IS BREAKING STEREOTYPES
ACCEPTANCE
We’re happy to know that women are being given the freedom and choice to choose who they want to spend the rest of their lives with, and the boy is equally excited and willing to impress his future family. So, the play between love and arranged marriage shows a positive leap that we’ve taken towards acceptance and openness by letting our daughters experience love, and ourselves (as fathers) to be able to give our daughter’s choice a chance.
GENDER DYNAMICS
For a change we saw a boy visiting his potential father-in-law to seek his approval instead of a girl. And it was super refreshing to know that in this day and age men are open to doing things that are still considered “odd”. I say we’re headed in the right direction with this ad because in the end, we tear up with pride and joy as the boy wins everybody’s heart. So, all’s well that ends well.
LAHORE VS KARACHI
The battle of the biryani is a forever debate, so we’re going to settle on the fact that both Lahore and Karachi serve the best biryani and pulao, right?! Oh well.. But in this particular ad, there is no competition. Their Beyji used to make the best biryani and after she’s gone, who pulls it off like a pro? The Karachi boy!
REAL MEN CRY, BUT SO DO BIG GUYS
Real men don’t cry because it makes them, well, less of a man, but this ad completely alters the situation. Despite his efforts, the Karachi boy feels hurt for not being able to live to everybody’s expectation. But surprisingly he quickly reverses the situation by coming to the rescue when the cook leaves, and cooks a dish that his future family is emotionally attached to, thus leaving everyone in tears of joy!
