Let’s be honest, our entertainment industry gets a bad rep for not being woke enough. Whether it is Zubaida Aapa’s whitening soap or the Hocane sisters’ take on anxiety and depression, even our favorites have leaned towards the problematic side. But then there are some leading ladies that use their voice for things that can actually drive the change; if not in a big way, then at least by starting the conversation.
These are the ladies we admire for standing up and speaking out.
MEHWISH HAYAT: REPRESENTING PAKISTAN & THE MESSAGE OF PEACE GLOBALLY
Love her or hate her, Mehwish Hayar has been living up to her Tamgha e Imtiaz by using her voice to promote Pakistan’s message of peace. Earlier this month, the actress was awarded the Pride of Performance by Norway’s Prime Minister. Instead of using the platform for self promotion, Mehwish gave a powerful speech, encouraging both Bollywood and Hollywood to portray the true image of Pakistan so that there could be more empathy between the nations.
ARMEENA KHAN: UNAFRAID AND OUTSPOKEN
When it comes to addressing social issues, Armeena Khan does not shy away from speaking out. After being vocal about human rights violation in Kashmir and calling out Priyanka Chopra for that press conference, Armeena has put Instagram under fire.
SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY: ADDRESSING HONOUR KILLINGS
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has already made us proud by bringing home two Academy Awards and 6 Emmy Awards. In her riveting documentary, “A Girl in the River—The Price of Forgiveness”, she expertly spoke about honor killings in Pakistan. On top of that she also proved that art that drive the change as this Oscar winning film pushed our then PM to review the law on honor killings.
AYESHA MALIK: CHALLENGING THE NATIONALISTIC RHETORIC
So by now, everyone in the world has heard of Ayesha Malik, and as her Twitter bio very wittily reads, she’s not done venting! Ayesha has been active on Twitter, educating people on how patriotism and nationalism is not the same. She has recently put The Gates Foundation under fire for presenting an award to Narenda Modi. We can’t wait to see what this superwoman does next!
thanks for sharing your thoughts. Don’t You think that Matira is missing in this list.
