Yes, social media has dumbed down people and has taken over our lives. And people are struggling to state the difference between what is fake and real. There is a lot that is circulated on the net these days and it’s natural to be want to be a part of a community, to indulge in conversations. But in all of this we must choose wisely about what we take in and what we communicate.
From taking selfies in the most ridiculous places (the most dumber way to die, so sorry to say) to being vulnerable enough for predators to take advantage of you, please take caution and be wise.
Here are 8 ways social media has dumbed us down!
Ps, Also check here why people are fake on social media!
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Sentences have been replaces with monosyllables, there’s a lot of slang usage, new words have been added in the dictionary, there’s a whole new lingo from the xennials that the millennials are trying to keep up with. In short, it’s tough to communicate or have a proper conversation, all thanks to social media.
INTIMACY
Social media is affecting relationships because we spend so much time online, which in return effects our direct line of communication with the ones we care about, “the holds our devices have on us is invisible until someone actively calls [it] to our attention.” Which is why you will see articles on how to keep your relationship strong in times of technology.
AUTHENTICITY
A positive self-expression comes with how satisfied with are in life, which is why people promote the notion that “be yourself” because if you show who you are, where you come and what you aim to do, will lead to a genuine appreciation towards not only your life, but gratefulness towards what you have.
FOCUS & CONCENTRATION
Going from app to app, which may lead to multi-tasking is actually distorting with your focus and attention span on one thing. And this one of the major neurological side effects of social media. Which is why we need to avoid being overstimulated from social media.
CONNECTION WITH OTHERS
Social media has been wreaking havoc on our human connections in ways such as decreased time with a partner, missed connections, jealousy, conflict arising from disagreements or hurt feelings, and undue negative comparisons.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS
In short, our ability to analyze, interpret, infer, and problem-solve, are all being impacted by social media for the worse. We focus more on emotion than on logic and there is less human interaction, which hinders our ability to question and simply assume to conclude what actually becomes a mountain out of a molehill.
STRENGTH & WORK ETHIC
Social media at workplace has its pros and cons. Apart from distracting you while you take a break from that PPT you make to just mindlessly scrolling because you feel like it, affects your work ethic. Instead of focusing on their core tasks and wasting useful work time increases psychological problems such as social networking addiction, stress, depression, and anxiety, which ultimately negatively affect job performance as well.
MORAL DEVELOPMENT & PRIORITIES
I personally think that our youths morals and priorities are being gravely effected because we tend to absorb the negative elements. Traits like forgiveness and self-control, arrogance, ignorance, bad judgment, and hatred are found more instead of humor, appreciation, creativity, love and courage, which affect our priorities in life.
