Mariyam Nafees is a talented actor and a stunning model. She is best known for her role in the hit TV drama serial Diyaar-e-Dil and Kuch Na Kaho. We get talking to the artist in an exclusive one-on-one. Here is everything we talked about!
Who in a nutshell is Mariyam Nafees?
I am somebody who speaks her mind and her heart and someone who just can’t filter words. I can take a bullet for my people. Creativity amuses me and pretence disgusts me. I’m somebody who loves experimenting (not with my food though). A free spirited person all in all.
Let’s talk a little bit about your professional career. How, when, where and why did it begin?
We were touring for our theatre show in Lahore. A friend called me up and asked if I was interested in doing a guest appearance for a serial which would require just a couple of hours. Being my experimental self, who’s always ready to take up new things, I agreed.
That play was directed by Waseem Abbas sir and I had to play Sajal’s friend in it. After that I was approached by the same production house for Munkir. During that shoot I got a role in Diyar-e-dil. Never thought I would become an actor but I guess you can’t really predict what’s written for you!
Talk to us about your childhood. What were some of the highlights? What do you miss the most?
As a kid I was an introvert. I liked staying home, playing with my then-oh-so-fancy toys and loved doodling with glitter stationery, creating food dishes in my tiny toy kitchenette and I had an obsession with stuffed toys (still do). The most I miss is bicycling. I used to absolutely looooove it and I plan on doing it as soon as I get back to Islamabad.
What about your education?
Early schooling was at American National, and high schooling at convent.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? Is that different from where you ended up?
Totally poles apart. I wanted to become a general physician. I loved lab coats, stethoscopes, helping and comforting people. But after my pre-med, I developed a few phobias and decided to let it go.
Describe your personality in three words.
Empathetic, spontaneous, unconventional.
Describe you career in three words.
Adventurous, glamorous and learningful.
What is your mantra?
Be yourself! Don’t care about what they say and do your thing.
What is your spirit animal? Why?
Butterfly (totally took the online quiz, hahaha) I love butterflies. Because they represent endurance, joy, hope, life, depth, colors. And all these things are quite relatable with my personality (Narcissistic much, huh?)
Who are some of the celebrity female empowerment figures that you aspire to be like?
Amal Clooney. That woman is absolutely incredible. From being a fashionista to standing up for human rights and voicing social issues, I think she’s doing it wonderfully.
Any advice?
Don’t care about what people think or say. If your conscious allows then go for it. Please take your social responsibilities seriously. Every bit, everyday counts. Make this world, especially your country, a better place.
